Urology of Virginia Partners with Captive Radiology to Install Siemens Biograph mCT

Urology of Virginia Partners with Captive Radiology to Install Siemens Biograph mCT — an innovative Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) scanner which offers accurate, fast and comfortable exams for Prostate Cancer patients.

[Virginia Beach, VA, December 5, 2023] ― Urology of Virginia (Urology of VA), a practice providing comprehensive urological care in Hampton Roads for nearly 100 years, has expanded its services via a strategic partnership with Captive Radiology with the installation of a Siemens Biograph mCT PET/CT scanner.

Through this partnership, patients will have the opportunity to receive PSMA (Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen) PET scans at Urology of VA’s 225 Clearfield Avenue location. The PSMA PET scan is a diagnostic technique used to detect prostate cancer throughout the body. It involves the use of a radioactive tracer that binds to PSMA proteins, which are overexpressed by prostate cancer tumors. The PSMA PET scan is FDA-approved and is more effective than current standard-of-care imaging techniques in detecting prostate cancer for better treatment planning and targeted care.

“The addition of a new PET/CT service line represents a transformative step forward for both the practice and for the care of patients,” Jennifer Miles-Thomas, MD FPMRS, President of Urology of Virginia, stated. “With this state-of-the-art technology, Urology of VA will be better equipped to accurately diagnose and monitor various urological conditions. This will not only speed up the diagnosis process but will also allow for the personalization of care. Each patient is unique, and the PET/CT will give physicians the ability to tailor treatment plans to the individual’s specific needs.”

The Siemens Biograph mCT is flexible to accommodate a broad patient demographic. Its innovative dose-reduction technologies minimize patient exposure to radiation. Additionally, the system’s fast scan times result in less patient motion, so image quality and the overall patient experience can be optimized.

“Urology of Virginia is among the nation’s most prominent and progressive Urology practices. Captive Radiology is excited to team with Urology of Virginia to deliver quality care to men in the greater Virginia Beach area.” Captive’s Sales Manager Mark Lautzenheiser stated. “This technology is changing the way Prostate Cancer is staged, managed, and treated. PSMA PET-CT is truly impacting patients’ lives, and having a small role in the patient’s journey is humbling for our team.

Captive’s services also include staffing the unit with a PET/CT Technologist and Assistant, servicing and maintaining the equipment, providing quarterly and annual physics surveys, ACR accreditation, and marketing support.

“As for the captive partnership, I envision a significant positive impact,” Miles-Thomas stated. “This partnership represents a groundbreaking shift towards a more collaborative and integrated approach to healthcare delivery. By leveraging this partnership, Urology of VA shows a commitment to constant improvement, fostering innovation, and ultimately delivering the highest possible quality of care to patients.”
