The Schellhammer Urological Research Foundation (SURF) recently introduced the SURF Futures in Research Scholarship to encourage talented students of all backgrounds to pursue careers in medical research. By offering this scholarship, SURF hopes to encourage more local graduates to enter the field of research.
SURF hopes that its $1,000 awards will entice students to think beyond medical school and consider the important fields of laboratory or clinical research. Graduating seniors from Bayside High School Health Sciences Academy, Deep Creek High School Science and Medicine Academy, and Maury High School Medical and Health Specialty Program are eligible for the scholarship if they can demonstrate interest and commitment to medical research.
The scholarship was helped in part by Tyler Verrett, a 2015 graduate of Maury High School’s specialty program in Norfolk. After graduating from college, Tyler joined the clinical research department at Urology of Virginia. He currently supports research for a large federal grant consortium to better understand the complexity and genetic components of prostate cancer. He is pictured here.
“I hope that this scholarship allows students to consider research as another career path to aid their community and the healthcare field.”
Both laboratory science and clinical research significantly contribute to the advancement of new therapies and treatments and advance our scientific knowledge of the body and medicine. Promoting research is a large component of SURF’s mission. The Schellhammer Urological Research Foundation (SURF) was initially founded in 1978 and is now the charitable foundation at Urology of Virginia.
