Testosterone Gels and Creams

Testosterone gels and creams are a popular and effective modality of testosterone replacement that require daily application and therefore keep testosterone levels in a consistent range. It is recommended that men apply testosterone gel in the morning, let the gel completely dry, and then get dressed. Working daily gel application into a routine helps with remembering to apply the gel, which can be challenging. If a dose is missed, additional applications are not needed.

There is a risk of transferring testosterone to someone who meets the gel before it is dry and absorbed. It is recommended for most formulations to not let anyone touch the area or submerge in water for 2-3 hours after application, and up to six hours for some formulations. Common gel application sites include the upper arms, shoulders, inner thighs, and the underarm. As stated above, the greatest benefit of gels is the consistent serum testosterone level. While testosterone gels are an effective treatment method, some men will have difficulty absorbing the gel and may need to seek an alternative treatment.
