Job Overview

Experienced Medical Lab Technician, Medical Laboratory Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist to work in a large specialty group’s Clinical Lab. This position consists of day shift hours, Monday – Friday, to include flexible weekend hours for microbiology (rotating) for those fully independent in microbiology. This position is 40 hours per week.

Primary:

• Perform microbiology tests for urine cultures, utilizing both manual and automated methods, as appropriate by CLSI standards. Successful candidate must meet CLIA high complexity testing personnel requirements
• Perform quality control procedures as outlined by lab procedures, with troubleshooting and resolution of outliers, as needed
• Participate in the performance of proficiency testing on all applicable lab tests
• Crosstrain to other areas of the laboratory as deemed appropriate and necessary.
• Maintain proper documentation as described in the quality assurance program, to include equipment records, maintenance logs, e-worksheets, specimen rejection documentation and quality control logs
• Utilize and maintain specimen logs, worksheets, and laboratory reports in Orchard lab information system (LIS)
• Manage patient lab results, providing accurate final reports to the ordering provider in a timely manner
• Provide lab support to medical staff as needed, regarding specimen collection requirements, testing procedures, training, and other issues as needed
• Accession and process lab specimens as outlined in lab procedures
• Use Epic EMR for communication with providers and staff regarding lab results, specimen rejection, provider orders, etc.
• Assist with other projects as directed by the lab supervisor, including but not limited to: validations, special reports, and reference (send-out) lab issues
• Maintain all laboratory equipment with appropriate documentation.
• Stock and monitor usage of laboratory supplies and reagents; to ensure adequate inventory of laboratory supplies is maintained
• Perform all duties according to current CLIA and OSHA regulations

Requirements :

Required License/Experience/Skills

• Minimum of Associate in Applied Science, Medical Laboratory Technician program from an accredited institution w/ 3 years relevant clinical laboratory experience, Microbiology preferred
• Medical Laboratory Technician ASCP/Board certified (board eligible considered)

• Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Technology/Clinical Laboratory Scientist from an accredited institution w/ 2 years relevant clinical laboratory experience, Microbiology preferred

Primary:

• Ensure that exam rooms are prepared, cleaned, and stocked in anticipation of patients and between patient visits, as needed. Prepare patient charts as necessary for appointments
• Prepare patients for in-office procedures and assist providers during examinations, treatments, and tests. Additionally, perform required procedures such as phlebotomy, bladder scans, catheter changes, etc.
• Collect and correctly label all necessary lab specimens, including but not limited to blood, urine, and biopsy tissue
• Perform CLIA-waived laboratory testing, strictly adhering to the policies and guidelines established by UVA and the practice
• Effectively use necessary PPE as appropriate and adhere to safe handling and disposal protocols for medical equipment and materials
• Provide patient education and training as needed, including but not limited to self-catheterization, bladder irrigations, pre-op instructions, and post-op care
• Utilize electronic medical records for documentation and charting of all patient information, including but not limited to phone encounters, appointment scheduling, lab results, provider orders, etc.
• Cover phones for patient triage, including prescription refills, appointment scheduling, and other duties related to aiding in patient care and treatment. This involves answering, documenting, and routing incoming patient calls when appropriate
• Obtain authorizations and pre-certifications for clinical treatments, exams, diagnostic testing, and prescriptions as required by the patient's health plan

Primary:

• Work the daily schedules and evaluate potential patient financial liability. Send communication to the front desk staff for collection of balances and copays and monitor successful outcomes
• Contacts patients with large balances prior to their appointment to ensure payment for services
• Work closely with the surgical coordinators to ensure collection of old balances, deductibles and surgical deposit prior to the surgical hospital work-up appointment
• Works with front desk staff to manage patients requiring implementation of payment of agreement and scheduled reconciliation of medication costs
• Meets with patients to discuss their financial situation. Offers financial options to patient such as free clinics, pharmaceutical assistance, and research trials
• Assists with daily phone calls
• Collects information and processes patient hardship applications. Ensures proper discounts for qualifying patients
• Negotiate payment plan arrangements and monitor these payment plans for timely and consistent payments
• Track patient payment compliance and seek/create opportunity for financial reconciliation of account balance to zero
• Serve as advocate for patient in conjunction with billing department regarding insurance issues, claim refiling, and resolution of outstanding claims due to insurance problems
• Prepare weekly/bi-weekly reports to Billing Management involving large balance accounts, non-compliant patients, and options available for patients to receive medically necessary care while reducing cost to UVA
• Miscellaneous:

      -Special Projects -VAS Reports for Concierge

      -Quarterly, Semi-annual and annual review of procedures/processes for success (or lack thereof)

o Make sure H&Ps, labs, cultures, diagnostic testing and clearances are obtained and up-to-date and that results are available for review prior to surgery date

o Ensure timely scanning of pre-op orders, consents, etc. into the patient EMR. 

o Schedule pre-op office appointment per physician protocol

o Schedule post-op office appointment per physician protocol

o Scan surgery documents into current EMR system 

• If necessary, assist patients with signing consents, explain orders and any other instructions at the time of preop visit or preop call
• Inform manager and physician of any potential scheduling conflicts or patient complaints/concerns
• Verify cases weekly in QGenda to maximize physician’s surgery time 
• Notify the Template Group if cases get cancelled and a physician able to work back into the office
• Admit patients directly to the hospital when needed
• Greet patients in a professional and courteous manner in person and on phone
• Utilize electronic medical records for documentation and charting of all patient information to include but not limited to phone encounters, appointment scheduling, lab results, physician orders, etc.
• Accurately maintain the office schedule and all calendars. Verify that Athena, QGenda and other scheduling tools match
• Reschedule office patients or surgery cases if physician schedules vacation, illness, or surgery
• Maintain the physician’s electronic calendar if necessary
• Assist in the training of new employees as needed 
• Perform other duties as requested

Requirements :

• High School Graduate or equivalent
• 1-3 years related surgery scheduling experience and/or secretarial experience
• Strong oral and written communication skills for corresponding with physicians, patients and fellow employees

• Handles complaints and inquiries by obtaining and evaluating all relevant data. Resolves the caller’s concerns in a timely fashion
• Coordinates changes, postponements and cancellations with other schedulers so that waitlist may be managed in a timely manner
• Completes prescription refills as per practice protocol
• Verifies and/or confirms appointments for patients are needed-PCR
• Indicates the services of an interpreter when deemed necessary
• Stays abreast of the practice’s participation with medical healthcare insurances and their requirements
• Projects an image of professionalism in both verbal and non-verbal communication to ensure a positive experience for patients, providers, visitors and colleagues
• Assists department management in identifying needs for training and staff education. Offers guidance, assistance and direction to less experienced team members
• Maintain a skill set talk time of no less than 7 hours (minimizing out of queue times)

Primary:

• Ensure that exam rooms are prepared, cleaned, and stocked in anticipation of patients and between patient visits, as needed. Prepare patient charts as necessary for appointments

• Utilize electronic medical records for documentation and charting of all patient information, including but not limited to phone encounters, appointment scheduling, lab results, provider orders, etc.
• Cover phones for patient triage, including prescription refills, appointment scheduling, and other duties related to aiding in patient care and treatment. This involves answering, documenting, and routing incoming patient calls when appropriate
• Obtain authorizations and pre-certifications for clinical treatments, exams, diagnostic testing, and prescriptions as required by the patient's health plan

We are seeking a Physician Assistant to provide office-based care within our Acute Care clinical model. This successful clinic allows a ‘same day/next day’ appointments model for patients with urgent urological conditions. Most common diagnoses are: kidney stones, hematuria, infection, urinary retention, etc. The Physician Assistant will decide upon intervention and follow up needs in collaboration with the supporting physicians. Involvement in procedural care is available and encouraged.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Demonstrate a high degree of general medical and urological knowledge and exercise independent judgment as appropriate
• Assess the patient’s medical conditions (Ex: kidney stones, hematuria, infection, urinary retention, etc.) by completion of a urological examination

We are seeking an APP to provide office-based care and see patients independently alongside collaborating physicians and APPs in our Cancer Center. Our APPs manage all aspects of urologic oncology including prostate cancer, bladder cancer, renal cancer, etc. APPs will manage cancer patients, with physician support, through diagnosis and discussion of treatment options, interpretation of ongoing labs and imaging, and management of cancer medications and related adverse events. We have a strong research program with 20+ clinical trials with APPs actively enrolling and monitoring patients.
